5.  Sri Lankan maid and her newborn baby die in sponsor's house

KUWAIT CITY, May 17, 2011: A Sri Lankan housemaid and her newborn baby died in the house of her sponsor in Qurain. Securitymen and medical emergency personnel rushed to the location after the Operations Room at the Ministry of Interior received a call from the sponsor of the housemaid. However, the maid and her baby were already dead when they arrived at the scene.
The sponsor told investigators the housemaid experienced difficulties while delivering the baby and since there were no medical facilities in the house, both of them died. Their remains were referred to Forensics. A case was registered and investigations are in progress to determine the actual circumstances leading to the death of the maid and her baby.

4. Saudi Barbaria: Sri Lankan Maid 'Tortured, Pimped from House to House

RIYADH, April 10th, 2011

Slavery, sexual violation and sadistic torture of the economically ensnared, brought to you by modern, dynamic Saudi Arabia™:

RIYADH: The husband of a Sri Lankan housemaid working in Riyadh says that his wife has been a victim of sexual assault by at least one male member of the family she has been working for in the Kingdom.

He also claims she was being pimped "house to house" as a prostitute and her proceeds were taken from her.

The 30-year-old woman from Panadura district near Colombo came to the Kingdom on Aug. 29, 2009 to work in a Saudi household. The husband of the woman, Kamal, claims he went to the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) about three months after his wife began working in Saudi Arabia to complain that she was being sexually assaulted by a son in the family.

"Since then no one has taken action to bring her home," he said. "My wife has been molested by her employer's son and has been subjected to various forms of torture."

The Sri Lankan Embassy in Riyadh claims that it is unaware of this case, but that it would investigate.

A senior official from the SLBFE said the bureau receives several complaints daily from the next-of-kin of the domestic aides who are working abroad.

"We cannot come to direct conclusion without consulting both parties," he said, indicating that he would request the Sri Lankan mission in Riyadh to inquire into this matter.

The most common form of abuse of maids is wage theft and false imprisonment (prohibiting maids from leaving the premises or preventing them from leaving when they express a desire to leave), but incidences of physical and sexual abuse are regularly reported.

The problem of runaway maids is big enough that the missions of labour-remitting countries run shelters for these women.

There are some 500,000 Sri Lankan workers in the Kingdom and more than half of them are housemaids, and the embassy official said most of these maids are treated in a satisfactory manner.

Where are the Libtarded 'Human Rights' NGOS on this? no, really… where are they?

3. Sri Lankan maid killed herself, police confirm

RIYADH, Mar 14, 2011: Arar police said on Monday the death of a Sri Lankan maid in Al-Jouf in January was a case of suicide. The Sri Lankan Embassy confirmed the report.

The woman was identified as Dilini Kumari, 26, from Nattandiya, a coastal town some 50 km from Colombo. The maid, who came to the Kingdom on Aug. 8, 2009, had been working for a Saudi family in the northern town of Arar. The death occurred on Jan. 12, 2011.

The autopsy report, which was released on Monday, said the maid consumed Clorox, a bleach used for cleaning. The maid's sponsor said the woman did not experience any problems and that her work was satisfactory.

Police said the maid was being paid her salaries regularly.

"The sponsor had agreed to pay any dues owed to the maid," said the police.

The Sri Lankan Embassy in Riyadh is making arrangements with the concerned authorities to repatriate the body home by next week.

This is the third death of a Sri Lankan maid in Al-Jouf province in four months. Two other maids — Pushpavalli Selladurai and Pavani Devi Sinnaiyah — were allegedly killed by their Saudi employers. According to the embassy records, there have been five such murders in last two years in the same region.

2. Lankan maid kept as slave for 17 years

RIYADH, Feb 11, 2011:The Sri Lankan Embassy rescued on Wednesday an Asian maid who was kept as a virtual slave by her Saudi sponsor for 17 years.

Kusuma Nandini, 56, came to Riyadh in 1994 from Sri Lanka and was kept a virtual prisoner at her sponsor's home. She was not paid salary even once during 15 years of her imprisonment and forbidden from communicating with her relatives in Sri Lanka . "This is a record breaking case in the history of housemaids in the Kingdom. This woman was kept as a slave at one home for 15 years and then transferred to the home of her sponsor's brother. There she was given a salary for two years," said Sunil Wijesinghe, labor welfare officer at the Sri Lankan Embassy.

According to diplomats, Nandini had forgotten her native tongue when she was rescued and behaved like a robot. "She couldn't speak her native language and had forgotten her family members when she was rescued," said Wijesinghe.

"After meeting other Sri Lankans at the embassy, the maid began remembering things and started picking up her native language," he added.

The Sri Lankan Embassy learned about Nandini's plight after her 25-year-old daughter, who lives in Kalutara, some 40 km from Colombo , informed the Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry that her family had not been in contact with her mother for 17 years.

Embassy officials visited the home of Nandini's sponsor and those who lived there denied she was there. Officials persevered and were able to subsequently track her down and bring her to the embassy.

"I came to Riyadh when my eldest daughter, Yamuna Vinodini, was eight years old. Now she is 25 years old. My son Ravika Priyankara was six years at the time," Nandini told Arab News, adding that she came to the Kingdom to earn money to pay for her children's education as her husband was not in proper employment at the time.

"I am very happy and thankful to the mission in Riyadh for having rescued me from this house where I was working like a machine," she said, adding that she thought there was no point in thinking of her home in Sri Lanka as she was permanently imprisoned in the house.

"I did not see sunlight during the past 17 years since no one took me out," she said.

The embassy is currently taking up the matter with the authorities concerned to get the maid's outstanding salary, which stands at SR54,000. Nandini has, however, managed to save SR7,200 which she received in wages from her sponsor's brother. She does not have a passport or a resident certificate to prove she was working in the Kingdom.

1. Nails removed from 'tortured' Sri Lankan maid

27 August 2010: LP Ariyawathie (left), Kamburupitiya Hospital, Sri Lanka Ms Ariyawathie (left) was deeply traumatised, doctors said

Doctors have removed 13 nails and five needles from a Sri Lankan housemaid who said her employer in Saudi Arabia hammered them into her body.

LP Ariyawathie, 49, told staff at Kamburupitiya Hospital her employer inflicted the injuries as a punishment.

X-rays showed that there were 24 nails and needles in her body. Doctors said those remaining inside her body posed no immediate threat to her life.

The nails were up to 2in (5cm) long, a hospital official said.

"The surgery is successful and she is recovering now," Dr Satharasinghe said, according to news agency Associated Press.

Ms Ariyawathie, a mother of three, underwent a three-hour procedure.

Doctors said they would carry out further surgery later to remove the remaining nails.
'Deeply traumatised'

Ms Ariyawathie travelled to Saudi Arabia in March to become a housemaid.

Last week, she flew back to Sri Lanka and was admitted to hospital in the south of the island, where she told doctors she had undergone abuse for more than a month.

The doctors found 24 metal pieces in her legs and hands.

She could not sit down or walk properly, doctors said.

They said Ms Ariyawathie was deeply traumatised and unable to give full details of her experience.

Meanwhile, Sri Lankan authorities have launched an investigation.

"We have launched a strong protest with the Saudi government through the external affairs minister, but there has been no response yet," Kingsley Ranawaka, chairman of Bureau for Foreign Employment, told the BBC.

Around 1.8 million Sri Lankans are employed abroad, 70% of whom are women.

Most work as housemaids in the Middle East, while smaller numbers work in Singapore and Hong Kong.
